How to Help a Teen Stop Procrastinating

Teen overcoming procrastination by starting one small homework task with a timer

By Guidance Game Plan Editorial Team

Procrastination is not always laziness. A task may feel too large, unclear, boring, or emotionally loaded. The goal is to make starting easier and build a system your teen can repeat.

Find the real sticking point

Ask, “What makes this hard to begin?” Listen for confusion, fear of doing it wrong, distraction, low energy, or not knowing the first step. Match the solution to the obstacle.

Use a five-minute start

Define one visible action: open the assignment, write the heading, or solve the first problem. Set a timer for five minutes. After starting, the teen may continue; if not, they have still practiced beginning.

Make time and place specific

  • Choose a start time, not just a due date.
  • Break work into 15–25 minute blocks.
  • Move the phone out of reach during each block.
  • Schedule a brief break and a clear stopping point.
  • Review tomorrow’s first task before ending.

Use calm accountability

Replace repeated reminders with one agreed check-in: “What is your first step, and when will you begin?” Praise follow-through and problem-solving, not only perfect results.
