FAFSA Checklist and Deadlines for Parents

Parent and college-bound teen organizing FAFSA documents, deadlines, and financial aid preparation

By Guidance Game Plan Editorial Team

The FAFSA can unlock federal, state, and college financial aid, but the process is easier when families gather information before they begin. Deadlines differ, so treat each college’s published date—not a general internet date—as the final authority.

FAFSA preparation checklist

  • Confirm which FAFSA form matches the student’s college year.
  • Create required StudentAid.gov accounts for the student and contributors.
  • Gather Social Security numbers or other requested identity information.
  • Have federal tax information and records of untaxed income available.
  • List colleges that should receive the FAFSA.
  • Use an email address the student checks regularly.

Track three kinds of deadlines

Check the federal deadline, your state’s deadline, and each college’s priority deadline. Some aid is limited, and a school may set a much earlier priority date. Verify current dates at StudentAid.gov and on every college financial-aid page.

After submitting

  • Save the confirmation and submission summary.
  • Review all information for errors.
  • Respond promptly to verification requests.
  • Compare financial-aid offers using net cost, not only award totals.
  • Update schools if the student’s list changes.

Use our FAFSA Quick-Start Checklist to organize the process, then explore more college and career readiness tools. Guidance Game Plan provides educational information, not individualized financial advice.
