FAFSA opening day shouldn’t be the first time your family thinks about financial aid. Families may need to create StudentAid.gov accounts, gather financial documents, understand unfamiliar terminology, and determine which parent or contributor needs to participate.

The FAFSA Quick-Start Checklist helps parents and students prepare before beginning the application. It explains which documents to gather, who needs an account, what important FAFSA terms mean, and which common mistakes can slow down the process.

Created by a former high school counselor and fact-checked against current federal guidance, this four-page printable resource turns a confusing federal process into a checklist families can work through together.

What’s included:

• A preparation checklist for creating StudentAid.gov accounts early
• Guidance on identifying who needs to participate as a contributor
• A document checklist covering Social Security numbers, tax returns, untaxed income, and account balances

• An overview of the FAFSA timeline
• An explanation of why families should pay attention to federal, state, and college deadlines
